![]() Thumbs up for this offering from Paco Rabanne, which I recommend as a blind buy as long as you're into this kind of fragrance, of course.įinal Note: In comparison to Black XS, which I also like, L'Exces is fresher, lighter and brighter, substitutes grapefruit and pineapple for strawberry and rhubarb, and has an immediately more wearable appeal. In some ways it's even better, and it costs much less. ![]() 9 Scent of Peace for Him you will probably like this one. And rather than incorporating that clumsy, woody-amber chemical that's being done to death in the base of today's men's scents, L'Exces succeeds with a simple synth sandalwood that remains relatively smooth and dry, providing a perfect platform for its fresh top. There are so many men's scents that have come out recently and have tried to capture what's been so effortlessly achieved here-to create a sweet men's masculine that combines fresh fruity qualities with woody undertones. Sounds tacky but actually comes across really cool and well done. I was also surprised by the quality of L'Exces' bottle-it's solid glass which fades from black to clear (top to bottom) and features a tiny, dark gray, solid metal skull dangling from its side, with "Black XS L'Exces' in gothic silver writing on the front. Performance is solid, slightly above average with decent projection and 6 to 8 hours of longevity. ![]() It's simple-fresh and sweet-and is perfectly wearable as there are no particular missteps, imbalances, or awkward moments in its development (in fact it's linear for the most part, just moving more toward the woody base as the fresh pineapple accord settles in). If you stumble across an affordable bottle, it’s worth a shot. What a pleasant surprise! L'Exces features a fresh, candied pineapple and grapefruit accord over a clean, synthetic woody base. The prices that I’ve seen for this are pretty high, so, it might just be one to forget about now. I think it has been discontinued, so if you want a bottle you’ll have to get it on the secondary market. It also gives a great performance in terms of sillage and longevity. I do really like how the patchouli was toned down and the praline seems to be gone, that’s a huge plus. Even though, I’m digging this more than the original, it’s not something I’d want to wear all the time or even often. Overall, do I like Black XS L’Exces? It’s nice. Just as one to wear around, this can venture into a variety of scenarios and can be used pretty much as a daily wear. The original was definitely more youthful. Not super serious nor is it a teenager’s cologne. Leans more for someone in their twenties to early 30s. I would say it is more of a casual or club kind of fragrance rather than something to wear to work or other formal settings. It’s got a good profile for the summer months. This cologne, however, could fit in year round and not be a mess. The original felt like a strictly winter scent to me. Not that it really needs to, but it isn’t an insane performer. Testing it out a few times, it doesn’t seem to go beyond that on my skin. The longevity is also good, I get right around 8 hours of wear from this juice. However, it calms down significantly, and I feel that it is ultimately a moderate. Again, not as sharp as the original Black XS that Paco Rabanne released, but it can be loud from the jump. Projection wise, it does start out strong. Mainly, the more outdoorsy or woody notes. It’s pretty linear, but as it dries down, it gets less citric and the other notes take a bigger stage. It is bright, fruity sweet, and with an outdoorsy heart lurking in the background. What you get is the citrus/pineapple aroma, sitting on top of a woody/lavender base that is soaked in amber. So, in a real sense, L’Exces isn’t intense or excessive. This is great! The note is still present, it is just that it has been subdued and doesn’t have a praline sweetness to blend with anymore. What I noticed most, is that it doesn’t have the same sharpness or overwhelming patchouli note that original has. Yes, the ingredient is lemon, but how it blends with the other notes produces a different aroma. It has the familiar lemon note, but in the original it smells like strawberry candy, and L’Exces smells more like pineapple. The opening of Black Xs L’Exces is actually quite similar to the original. So, when getting a hold of a sample vial of L’Exces, I was worried that it would be more of the same…just intense. Namely, the heavier patchouli note, and how it blends with the praline. It was a blind buy and while I do kind of enjoy how it smells, there are issues which always bugged me, however. I think it’s been on my shelf for the past two years, with nary a wear on my part. I own a full bottle of the original Black Xs and hardly ever wear it. Notes include: lemon, patchouli, lavender, amber, cypriol oilĬlick here to try: Paco Rabanne Black Xs L’exces Eau de Toilette Intense Spray for Men, 3.4 Ounce
